Punishment for Rape around the world

As almost everyone connected to India knows the sad incident of girl in Delhi and the uproar of people for capital punishment.

As the law of every country has its own procedures and time frames for judgement, I just did some research to find out how many countries have death penalty for rape.

The answer according to below graph is, only two countries in the world.

The bible says either the culprit should get married with the victim or given death penalty.

Emotionally I'm in favour of the capital punishment so people will be afraid to execute heinous acts like this again, but logically I do not think Indian government will give capital punishment.

I just wish and pray to almighty to stop this kind of tragedies in the future.

More details about Indian Rape laws here and global laws here.

If you don't know what I'm talking - A Google search of "Delhi Gang Rape" gives you About 217,000,000 results in (0.22 seconds).

3 minutes a week workout

I've been studying/reading a lot about human physiology lately.

I found this piece, which talks about how 3 minutes exercise a week can make difference to your overall health.

It is really simple but kills you if you do it full throttle for one minute

1.     Warm Up for a minute
2.     Full throttle for 20 seconds
3.     Relax for a minute
4.     Full throttle for 20 seconds
5.     Relax for a minute
6.     Full throttle for 20 seconds

What I wish for this Hindu New Year?

Diwali is one of the biggest festival according to Hindu tradition, it marks win of good over evil. Also Hindu New Year starts from today. As per human nature we(most) wish things to happen every New Year, either Christian or Hindu or Muslim or any faith.

So being a human I wish something happens or others do (without much effort from me..Lazy me!). Wishing is good as it does not cost anything.

Why Worry and Why Pray?

A brilliant poem I read from the book Anchored Boat (previous post) which is really inspiring. I think positive-attitude will also go very well instead of PRAY below.

WORRY? why worry? what can worry do?
It never keeps a trouble from overtaking you.
It gives you indigestion and sleepless hours at night, and fills with gloom the days, however fair and bright.
It puts frown upon the face and sharpness to the tone.
We are unfit to live with others and unfit to live alone.
WORRY? why worry? what can worry do?
It never keeps a trouble from overtaking you.

PRAY? why pray? what can praying do?
Praying really changes things, arranges life anew.
It's good for digestion, gives peaceful sleep at night and fills the grayest, gloomiest day with rays of glooming light.
It puts smile upon your face,The love-note in your tone,
Makes you fit to live with others and fit to live alone.
PRAY? why pray? what can praying do?
It brings God from heaven to live and work with you.

Mirror

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what THAT man has to say.

For, it isn't your father or mother or wife
Who judgement upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

Is slow eating good?

Everyday we give this instructions at dinner table to our kids– Eat Slowly, Eat Slowly or your tummy will get upset.

While these words came out from our belief, I didn’t have any proof to prove that I was giving right instructions so I fired up the Google box and found this study.

30 women made two visits to Melanson’s lab, and each time they were given a large plate of pasta and told to eat as much as they wanted. When they were told to eat quickly, they consumed 646 calories in nine minutes, but when they were encouraged to pause between bites and chew each mouthful 15 to 20 times, they ate just 579 calories in 29 minutes.

multitasking does hurt your brain

The interesting bit for me is - the amount of media we consume daily is 12 hours.

astrology is bullshit

In MX (the free newspaper we get at the train stations in Melbourne), there is a section called “Should I get out of bed?” which predicts your future for next day. I used to read it and after so many failed predictions I've stopped reading it.

When i had bright future next day, I used to get sudden rush of happiness (might last only for 10 minutes) but when there is crap stuff, the next half hour is ruined (and may more at times).

I’ve been wondering about why this (very popular) ancient system fails most of the times to predict things correctly!

These Research paper explains why my decision to stop reading astrological predictions was good.

In the study, they picked up the best once

The experimental subjects were six individuals (one man, five women) nominated by the IFA (American Federation of Astrologers) as astrologers with superior ability

Suggestions for Tagline and Blog Name

I’ve just started this blog and luckily I got my hands on book "31 Days to Building a Better Blog."

It talks about importance of tag line and blog name. After thinking about both I've come up with following

Blog Name - The Rational Helper
Tag Line - for the seeker & dysfunctional souls

Reason behind this choice

I'll be mainly writing around following theme
    • helpful information for others
    • productivity, simplification tips
    • analyse information and put logical view...(not take things for granted, analyse it and explain what real deal is)
    • interesting stuff (Technology, Science, entertainment, random thoughts)

The keywords I chose because i think it achieves the content, I'm going to provide…

Rational - Information will be logically filtered
Helper - Information will be (almost) always be helpful to the reader
Seeker - For the people who would like to learn and are in search of new information (like me)
Dysfunctional - we all are dysfunctional in one or another area of life. I read a lot about improving productivity, simplification etc…I will be putting my thoughts on the blog so it will help other dysfunctional souls (like me).

Before I change the current title and tag line I'll appreciate your views & thoughts.

No suggestion is too silly :)

use youtube as radio or non stop music player

Today I discovered two great services offered by YouTube.

First YouTube Leanback - http://www.youtube.com/leanback

YouTube Leanback is effortless as watching TV. You type what you want to see and it will keep playing videos (in full screen) of your desire. For example I put in Robbie Williams and it kept playing till I stopped after around 14 songs.

Great when you cooking or exercising !

Second is YouTube Disco - http://www.youtube.com/disco

You can enter any music group or artist, and a playlist pops up, You can find related artists, create a mixtape, and save playlists. This seemed almost similar to above.

I searched “Dil Se” in disco and it found 100 tracks of A.R.Rahman.

This is streaming videos so it is using more data download than online radio service.

bollywood's top actors of this century

I bumped across this piece while wondering in the cyber world.

It is a survey of top 15 actors of Bollywood by NDTV.

NDTV says ... Here at NDTV, we conducted a viewer poll on their top 15 popular heroes in the last 100 years of Bollywood. And the results, least to say, were astounding!

Here is the list with percentage of vote

interest rate and economists and AUDUSD

So almost everyone (who have mortgage in Australia) knows that RBA has lowered its interest rate by 0.25 points. Which is good news for many like me, as I’ll be paying less money to the bank.

I've been keeping an eye on economists and their predictions since I started trading. I think 8 out of 10 times they've made fool of themselves by predicting the future.

Yesterday only 9 economists (from 28) said that there will be a cut in Bloomberg survey.

While markets were trading on the basis of a 75 per cent chance the RBA would trim the cash rate by 25 basis points to 3.25 per cent tomorrow, only nine of 28 economists surveyed by Bloomberg on Friday thought it would.

then you’ll be successful!

“When you want to be successful as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful!”

Now I've to push myself a little bit more today, few more push ups and sqats.

challa song, rahman again with his brilliance.

Seems, the drought of good music from Bollywood is going to be over soon

well…i had to start someday!

I’ve been trolling this idea for a while to start a blog. I had my own domain name for a while and once I found free hosting platforms for blogging, I didn’t have any excuse not do start.

Still I’ve been procrastinating…I was exactly like this dude

Why I've been procrastinating? Because I was thinking about how others will react to my posts.

I remembered this quote from Gandhiji about why you should not worry too much about others, just do what you feel is right - “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Eventually I said "screw it let's do it".

Not all the stuff will please you, but someday it might. As I read somewhere “I can only please one person a day and today it is me”

The posts will be mainly on few of my interests like science, philosophy, psychology, planning, Finance, Technology, Trading and random stuff.

This is an open blog and I welcome anyone interested to contribute.

Till next time...
